Top 10 Rom Coms to Watch While You Crochet.
We have entered the deepest parts of winter, and it is the season for staying in, binge-watching movies, and embarking on new crochet projects. This list of films will provide you not only with comfort and entertainment, but also, crochet and knitwear inspiration to inspire your next project.
1) 10 Things I Hate About You (1999)
This one is first on the list for two primary reasons:
1) it is one of my all-time favourites
2) it features an iconic crochet outfit
The premise: simple. Cameron falls for Bianca who is forbidden to go on dates until her un-datable older sister starts dating. Heath Ledger in his breakout role, late 90’s / early 2000’s costuming, a time before cell-phones?!
The crochet costume feature is so iconic that @purlsandknits did a whole tutorial so you can learn to recreate this look for yourself!
2) Legally Blonde (2001)
Over 20 years later, this film can never be re-watched too many times. Fashionable sorority queen Elle Woods follows her ex-boyfriend to law school… I continuously rewatch to manifest her wardrobe, her attitude, and her ambition.
3) Josie and the Pussy Cats (2001)
This movie defined my childhood; it is in my letterboxed top 4 picks. Based on the comics, a group of small-town wanna-be rockstars get to leave Riverdale (yes THE Riverdale) after landing a life-changing record deal. The film feels particularly poignant in 2026 as it is a commentary on how the media manipulates messaging in the name of corporate capitalist greed. It is also campy, has a star-studded cast, and Mel in particular has a wardrobe full of crochet pieces.
just imagine crochet versions of these tops… (@crochetbybelladonna gets the vision)
4) When Harry Met Sally (1989)
Argued by many as “the most iconic rom-com of all time” this movie actually defined the genre of the rom-com itself, characterized by its honesty, witty dialogue, and slow-burn pace that lay the groundwork for all its successors. Set in New York in the fall, you can admire the characters’ choice of knitwear to inspire your own creations!
5) I Could Never be your Woman (2007)
Not enough people know about this movie that was created by the writer of Clueless, and features Michelle Pfeiffer, Paul Rudd, and Saoirse Ronan (as a child) ! The plot is: a mother falls for a younger man while her daughter falls in love for the first time, but it also features a lot of silly commentary on the early 2000’s obsession with plastic surgery, barbies, self-esteem, and womanhood. I give it a 10/10 I have probably seen it 100 times. Saoirse Ronan’s character’s costumes feature a lot of DIY pieces, I could definitely see her rocking a crochet tie.
6) Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961)
A blueprint for divas and manic pixie-dream girls, giving us a window into the glamour of the 1960’s New York. The fashion, cinematography, and soundtrack are reason enough alone to watch (or rewatch).
7) Clueless (1995)
Coming of age 90’s film with an aspirational wardrobe and a bygone era of being a teenager before the internet. I think based on this list I am understanding my affinity for Paul Rudd and amazing costumes; this film has both!
8) Bottoms (2023)
We can thank Bottoms not only for the masterpiece of a modern rom-com it is, but for playing a pivotal role in launching Rachel Sennott (who gave us I love LA), and Ayo Edebiri (The Bear, After the Hunt, Ella McKay) into stardom. Two unpopular queer high-school students start a self-defence club to meet girls and lose their virginity before graduation. This film sort of lives in the world of Not Another Teen Movie (2001), Bring it On (2000), and Wet Hot American Summer (2000).
Also look at what Kaia Gerber wore to press for the film. Try and recreate your own!
9) Wishful Thinking (1997)
Max is not ready to marry his longterm girlfriend Elizabeth. His coworker Lena takes advantage of his emotional struggles and tries to win him over. The film explores a romantic entanglement from 3 angles. Short and sweet (1hr and 34mins), you will be dazzled by Drew Barrymore’s eclectic, maximalist fashion.
10) Alex and Emma (2003)
This list is for yes, some classic rom-coms you may want to re-watch, but also some with a star studded cast that you may not even know of! Loosely based off the life of Russian author Fyodor Dostoevsky and the true story of his process of writing his novel The Gambler in 1866, Luke Wilson’s character has taken an advance to write his next novel and only has 30 days to complete the novel and pay off the debt. Something I love is that this movie is time-stamped in history, this would never happen now with computers and AI, but he hires Kate Hudson, a stenographer (essentially a transcriber) to help him complete the task. Directed by Rob Reiner who gave us all SO many of the classics (Sleepless in Seattle, When Harry Met Sally, First Wives Club, etc).
So, grab your needles, your yarn, turn on the TV, and get to it!
Which one is your favourite? Did we leave any out? Let us know, leave us a comment!
