Exploring The “Birkin Bag Effect”

As someone who is chronically online in the fashion space, I felt drawn to this recent trend we’ve been seeing on social media, “Jane Birkin-ifying” your bag, and I needed to share my thoughts.

Let’s talk about it.

First, let’s get one thing straight: this is nothing new. In fact, the reason for this trend comes from Jane Birkin, who was often seen loading up on accessories to be put on display on the straps of her bag.

I totally get why this is popular right now. We’ve been seeing a transition on Tiktok and Instagram this past year. What used to be platforms full of microtrends and fast fashion consumerism, has now shifted a bit, into a seemingly slower fashion model.

We don’t have the money to spend on new clothes every week just to keep up with the trends, and frankly, we’re tired of it! We’re seeing creators slow down with their spending and re-normalize outfit repeating. A well-fitting plain white tee and baggy jeans is the new “it-girl outfit” (and I’m here for it). Basically, trend fatigue is at an all-time high, and we’re opting for the things we already have.

We’re buying less new clothing, which means we’re investing more into the details: a unique pair of shoelaces from the thrift store, a one-of-a-kind hat we’ve had for years, or a keychain from our trip this past Summer. These little details are ways for us to show our personality through our style, the way fashion is intended to be!

Honestly, I love this trend, and I hope it’s here to stay. It’s full of personality, and it’s sustainable (or at least, it can be)! It’s encouraging us to use what we already have, and put it on display. This accumulation of memories, caricatures, or even just unique shapes shows our creativity to the world, and hangs right on our shoulders.

Here’s my take on it!
